Grilled Pork Skewers ( Moo Ping) + How to Cook StickyRice with A Simple Rice Cooker within 30 minutes.
Believe it or not? This is one of the most common "Breakfast" for Thai people. Yes , I didn't have any typo. It's a breakfast and it can be a snack sometimes ... Believe me.
This recipe reminds me when I was very young. On that time I still lived in Bangkok and everyone knows how good of the traffic there. I spent almost 1 hour to go to school. So, my mum always bought grilled pork skewers with cooked sticky rice ( glutinous rice) as my breakfast. When I finished wearing clothes, just took the meal, kissed my mum and dad and got myself into the car. And all I needed to do is eating grilled pork skewers with cooked sticky rice on the way school. Sometimes I ate even green sweet curry as "Breakfast in Car"sometimes. I'm not kidding lol.
This recipe tastes a little bit salty from soy sauce and sweet from honey. If you are not a fan of sweet food. It's better to reduce amount of honey in the recipe. Are you ready? So let's get started.
Ingredients ( for 6 skewers / 2 persons)
1. 250 g pork collar (I use this part because it's soft when it's grilled), cut into around 2x 4 cm
2. 1 tablespoon black soy sauce.
3. 2 tablespoons honey
4. 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
5. 1 1/2 tablespoon light soy sauce
6. 2 cloves garlic , minced
7. 2 coriander ( cilantro) root, minced
8. 1/4 tablespoon black pepper
9. 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
10. 1/2 tablespoon corn starch
11. 1 tablespoon evaporated milk
Instructions
1. Marinate the pork by mixing all ingredients with pork in the mixing bowl.
2. Cover and marinate it at least 4 hrs in refrigerator.
3. Soak the skewers at least 30 minutes before using.
4. Thread the pork on to skewers and grill them with a low heat ( I grilled them on a pan, it was too chilly to grill outside). Brush the marinade onto the pork occasionally. And yes it's done! Serve the pork with sticky rice. Uhmmm yum yum!
Some Thai foods , especially north-eastern Thai foods , always served with "sticky rice" . I gotta confess that when I was in Thailand, I never cooked it by myself "at all" ( because my lovely mum cooked that for me lol ) . Moreover , I found it very complicated to cook sticky rice. It consumes time and needs the special kitchenware "Huad"to cook it. Since I moved to Sweden, sometimes I really wanna have sticky rice. So I gotta search how to cook sticky rice on the Thai food forum. Most of the methods that I found were still complicated and time consuming. Some methods were so easy .... But it didn't work.
By the way, I found out this method accidentally while I did " trial and error" methods how to cook sticky rice. The result was very good! I was very happy that finally I can have north-eastern Thai food lol. So let's see how to cook it.
These are what we need :
1. 3 parts of sticky rice
2. 2 parts of water
3. Hot water
How to do:
1. Put 3 parts of sticky rice on the bowl ( I use glass bowl) and then add the hot water. Stir a little bit and let the rice soaked into the hot water for 10 minutes.
2. Drain the rice well by sieve. You can notice that the outer part of the rice grain is already swollen, but the inner part is still hard.
3. Add the rice into the rice cooker. Add 2 parts of water. Then click cook button.
4. Let the rice cooker work and yes, it's done! ...
