Taste for A Very First Time : Surströmming! + Ultimate Guide for Having Surströmming

Hej! Today there's no a recipe on the blog, but today I'm gonna share my first time experience... On having one of the smelliest food in the world. Yes! I'm talking about "Surströmming"

Before, all I know about surströmming is that surströmming or fermented herring is freaking smelly and unpleasant to eat. Sometimes I watched surströmming challenge on Youtube. There were a lot of people vomitted when they ate "Swedish delicacy".

It is kind of disgusting to see them puke on the videos actually. But I couldn't deny that it intrigued me. I just really wanna try at least 1 time in my life. So I asked my friends last winter if we could do this sometimes. They said yes , but it should be around middle of August... We need to wait on that time.

Almost 1 month ago when we were in supermarket. My friend held the can of surströmming and ask me if we should have "surströmmingskiva" or surströmming party sometimes. I was really reluctant and said no. But my friend took it into the shopping cart anyway and said "we need to try this once in a lifetime" ......

After ton of excuses, now it's a time to try surströmming. I must confess that I was so excited and scared in the same time because I didn't wanna end up with vomiting in the forest and find something more pleasant to eat when I come back home.

So this is what I expected from suströmming : smelly and pungent smell with a yucky consistency  which makes me puke within 5 seconds and say to my friends like "ok! Leave it and come back home and eat normal meal!!!!"

This is What I experienced : smell like old garbage. It smells bad but not that bad. There was no pungent smell. The fish taste very salty .

I wanna tell you that " I was so disappointed with the smell" I thought it would smell worse than this. But yes ... It is still unpleasant to eat and I think this is really salty.

Here this is how Swedish people eat surströmming..

1. Remove skin, gut and bone of surströmming before having ( i recommend surströmmingfilé , all you need to do is just removal of skin)

2. Spread butter on "Tunnbröd" or thin bread , then add red onion, boiled almond potatoes, surströmming and topping with sour cream and chives .... Then you can eat! The taste is quite really good actually.

3. For a good friendship with your neighbour. I guess it's better to eat it at open-air area ( for me , I rode the bicycle to the middle of forest to have surströmming)

So this is all! I hope that you have fun reading this story. Maybe you can order online and try sometimes. It's challenging!!! Maybe you will fall in love with this Swedish's delicacy ... Who knows lol
